you really mean "square" as opposed to square root.
but, to answer your question, you apply the "order of operations" (PEMDAS)
exponents first...
.
f(x) = 2x� + x - 5
f(3) = 2*3� + 3 - 5
f(3) = 2*9 + 3 - 5
f(3) = 18 + 3 - 5
f(3) = 21 - 5
f(3) = 16
