The average rate of change over an interval is simply the slope of the line segment which connects the endpoints of the interval.
So...- Use the x coordinates of the endpoints (1 and 5) and the function to find the y coordinates of the endpoints.
- With the two points, use the slope formula to find the slope. This will be the "average rate of change".
