In order to determine the value of x, we need to take the square root of both sides of the equation. In this case, we will not get a nice integer, instead we will get a decimal result. But that's ok... it doesn't mean that is wrong, it is just uncommon. Most problems are setup in such a way to yield whole numbers (integers).

Note: when we take the square root of a squared exponent, they cancel each other out. So, we are left with:

Now, you may leave it like this or calculate the decimal equivalent using your calculator. Which would be: <-- result has been rounded.

Take the square root of each side of the equation, giving you




NOTE: You really don't need the 0 in front of the +/-, but the algebra.com notation requires that I put it there!
