Question 23729: In algebra if i have the problem the square root of N is equal to n^2+6n-18, if i am solving is as an equation... how am I suppposed to undo the square root of a variable? (Does it have something to do with the N^2??) Please help me.
Thanks in advance.

To "undo" a square root, you are correct! You must SQUARE both sides! However, once you DO square both sides, the answers that you get MUST be checked because there is the chance of EXTRANEOUS ROOTS!! I'm curious about your choice of capital N compared with lower case n's in the rest of the problem. Is this a different variable or did you mean to use the same n in the entire problem? In algebra, variables ARE case sensitive, so be careful about that.

Squaring both sides would give you:
Are you sure that's what you want to do??

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
sqrtN= n^2+6n-18
Square both sides to get:
N = (n^2+6n-18)^2
You could then square the right side but that
wouldn't get you any closer to a simplified
answer.
