The lengths of two sides of a square are extended 5 inch. The area of the resulting square 64 square inch. Find the length of a side of the orginal square?
------------------
Let original side be "x".
Original area = x^2.
------------------
New side is x+5.
New area = (x+5)^2
-------------------
EQUATION:
(x+5)^2 = 64
x+5 = 8
x = 3 inches (original side length)
