Say you had a number:
.
Imagine, if you will, a general decimal number. The location of the digits represents:
a.bcd
^ ^^^
| |||__ thousandths
| ||___ hundredths
| |____ tenths
|______ units
.
If you are approximating to the nearest tenths, all you need to do is look at the digit to the immediate right (the hundredth) digit.
Two conditions:
#1
If it is less than 5, eliminate ALL digits to the right of the tenths digit
#2
If it is 5, or more, eliminate ALL digits to the right of the tenths digit AND increment the tenths digit.
.
For example:
1.23456
Since the hundredth digit (3) is less than 5, we use condition #1:
1.2
.
Another example:
1.26789
Since the hundredth digit (6) is greater than 5, we use condition #2:
1.3
