Question 1072737: For this question, please show work so I can get a better understanding.
What is the exact irrational root written in simplified radical form, and the approximate root rounded to the nearest hundredth? Thanks.
Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(m/2)-3=sqrt (5)
square both sides
(m^2/4)-3m+9=5
(m^2/4)-3m+4=0
multiply both sides by 4
m^2-12m+16=0
m=(1/2)(12+/- sqrt (144-64); sqrt (80)=8.94
m=20.94/2=10.47
m=3.06/2=1.53
Check
5.235-2.236=0 within rounding error.
0.77-2.236 does not equal 3.
The answer is 10.47; the other root is extraneous.
