Question 45029This question is from textbook Beginning Algebra
: I am not very good with Algebra. My question is:
Add. -3 + (-4) + (+12)
I do not remember how to do this problem.
I have tried adding it on paper. I have tried adding it up on the calculator. If I remember correctly, 2 negatives = a positive number.
Here is my solution:
-3 + (-4)= 7 + (+12)= 19. Is that correct?

Question 45407: I am supposed to show steps with this, but the book (Saxon)is pretty confusing to me as to how to preform the problem because I don't see the rules for multiplying and dividing postive and negative numbers mixed. For example, they show to SIMPLIFY (-3)(-3)(-2)(4)
These are the steps they take:
= -(3)(3)(2)(4)
= -(9)(8)
= -72
Why is there a minus sign to the left of the 9 and 3 in the first two rows?
I have this problem to solve, but it's not in the book:
Simplify:
(6)
---
(-2)
So I understand that means six divided by negative two. I understand the answer is -3 (isn't it?) but I don't understand how to take steps as shown above.
On this problem-
Simplify:
(6)(2)
I did this:
(6)(2)= +12
(4)(3)= +12
= +12
Is that right and did I show the steps correctly?
Thank you!

Question 45420: Hi, Here are the questions written by my child's teacher- and we couldn't find any examples in the book just like these- please tell me if we did them correctly. I really don't like it when teachers start making up their own problems if there are not examples in the book for me to help my child with! Thank you!
Simplify, Show your work (what work?!)
(6)/(-2)= -3
(6)(2) = +12
(-6)/(-2)= +3
(6)(2)= -12

Question 46535: When you have a problem written like this:
7 - (13 - 8) + 3 . 2
___________________
10 - (-5)
Is it asking you to first subtract 8 from 13, take that number and subtract it from 7, add that number to three, then take that number and multipy by 2, OR is it saying to subtract from 8 from 13, subtract 7, multiply 3 x 2 and THEN add that to the answer you got when you subtracted seven?
