Question 254587: order of operation for (3/4-2/3)+(1/2+1/3)
order of operation for 1/2+(2/3 div by 3/4)-(4/5*5/6)

order of operations
PEMDAS
parentheses
exponents
multiplication
division
addition
subtraction
Simplify and combine what is inside each set of the parentheses first
then everything else will look simple.
so start with the first set of parentheses
(3/4-2/3)+(1/2+1/3)
1/2+(2/3 div by 3/4)-(4/5*5/6)
you have to subtract fractions that don't have the same denominator.
(3/4-2/3)
for the first two you have denominators of 3 and 4 so you need 12ths
(1/2+1/3) here you have denominators of 2 and 3 so need 6 but you will be adding to 12th's so it might be better to use 12th's here too
second problem
1/2+(2/3 div by 3/4)-(4/5*5/6)
First thing is divide one fraction by another.
Do you remember the trick for that?
take the second fraction and invert it (turn it upside down ) so now you have 3/4 turned over to 4/3
so now you multiply 2/3*4/3 which is the same as 2/3/3/4 and easier to deal with
next you have to multiply 4/5*5/6 that is simple enough you get to cancel out a couple numbers here and reduce it
now rewrite the fractions with the new results and see what you have.
It should all look easy now.
Let me know how you do
