First get rid of the -8 on the left by adding its opposite, +8, to both sides

15x - 8 = 55

------------
15x ` ` = 63
`
Now get rid of the 15 coefficient of x by dividing both sides by 15
`
15x ` 63
--- = --
15 ` `15
`
` ` 63
x = --
` ` 15
`
This reduces to
`
` ` 21
x = -- or 4.2
` ` `5
`
