add up all the numbers with the same sign.

you will have the sum of the positive numbers and you will have the sum of the negative numbers.

the sum of the positive numbers is a positive number.
the sum of the negative numbers is a negative number.

if the positive number is bigger than the negative number without taking the sign into account, then subtract the negative number from the positive number and make the result positive.

if the negative number is bigger than the positive number without taking the sign into account, then subtract the positive number from the negative number and make the result negative.

a couple of examples should give you the idea.

you are adding 50 and -25.

since the positive number is bigger than the negative number, subtract the negative number from the positive number and make the result positive.

the result will be 50 minus 25 = 25

next example:

you you are adding -50 and 25.

since the negative number is bigger than the positive number, subtract the positive number from the negative number and make the result negative.

50 - 25 = - 25.

next example:

50 - 25 + 50 - 25

the sum of the positive numbers is 100.
the sum of the negative numbers is -50.

you are adding 100 and -50.

since the sum of the positive numbers is bigger than the sum of the negative numbers, subtract the sum of the negative numbers from the sum of the positive numbers and make the result positive.

100 minus 50 = 50.

next example:

-50 + 25 - 50 + 25

the sum of the negative numbers is -100.
the sum of the positive numbers is 50.

you are adding -100 and 50.

since the sum of the negative numbers is bigger than the sum of the positive numbers, subtract the sum of the positive numbers from the sum of the negative number and make the result negative.

100 minus 50 = -50.

whether you are dealing with single numbers or sums of numbers, the rules are the same.

the sum of all positive numbers is a positive number.

the sum of all negative numbers is a negative number.

if you are adding numbers that have different signs:

you always subtract the smaller number from the larger number without taking into account the sign of the number.

the result takes the sign of the bigger number.

some more examples:

500 - 700 = 700 - 500 = -200

the difference between 700 and 500 is 200 and the result is negative because the largest of the numbers is negative.

700 - 500 = 700 - 500 = 200

the difference between 700 and 500 is 200 and the result is positive because the largest of the numbers is positive.

10 - 100 = 100 - 10 = -90

the difference between 100 and 10 is 90 and the result is negative because the largest of the numbers is negative.

The Rule Is When The Signs Are The Same You Add AND Keep The Same sign.
Exampe:-2-4=-6.
Example:-2-(-4)=
Is best to multiply to get rid the grouping symbols first before combing.(combing means to add or subtract like terms according to the signs).
-2-(-4)=
-2+4=
