Let x = no. of senior citizens
:
It said there were a total of 535 people, therefore:
(535-x) = no. of adults
:
adults $amt + seniors $amt = $8355
21(535-x) + 13x = 8355
:
11235 - 21x + 13x = 8355; multiply what's inside the brackets
:
-21x + 13s = 8355 - 11235; subtract 11235 from both sides
:
-8x = -2880
or
8x = 2880; multiplied equation by -1, to get rid of the negatives
:
x = 2880/8
:
x = 360 seniors
:

Check our solution; find no. of adults: 535 - 360 = 175 adults:
21(175) + 13(360) =
3675 + 4680 = 8355
