The sigma means to sum the values, substituting successive integer values of k in the equation from k=1 to k=infinity. (Of course, k cannot equal infinity, so it just approaches it.)
When k=1, the entire denominator is raised to the zeroth power, so it equals 1. And 1/1=1. All other values of k will lead to the denominator being larger and larger, which means the resulting value of the division gets smaller and smaller.
