The question states
With Sn denoting the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence, we are given that S1=9 and S2=20.
Can you please explain to me what denoting means?

denote is to indicate, define, equal or name.

The denoting  S1 = 9  literally means that the sum of 1 term is 9.

     It is, of course, the same as to say that the first term is 1.



The denoting  S20 = 20  means that the sum of the first 20 terms of the progression is equal to 20.
