How many students are identified to have measles in all at the end of the 6th day of the outbreak?

each day the number of new cases doubles from those identified with the disease the day prior.

on the first day the number of new cases was 8.
on the second day the number of new cases was 16
then 32 on the third day.
then 64 on the fourth day.
then 128 on the fifth day.
then 256 on the 6th day.

on the first day you total 8.
on the second you get a total of 8 + 16 = 24
on the third you get a total of 24 + 32 = 56
on the fourth you get a total of 56 + 64 = 120
on the fifth you get a total of 120 + 128 = 248
on the sixth you get a total of 248 + 256 = 504
