Why do you "need" this? It is not mathematics; it is a riddle. Either you see the answer or you don't.

Actually, mathematically, there is no way to know "the" answer to this, or to ANY similar problem. You could put any number next (or even something that is not even a number!) and it would be a valid sequence.

I recognize this one as one I have seen many times.....

Try writing out (in words, that is) the numbers 1 through 10 and see how that relates to your sequence.
