Question 1117534: may you please help me, i need assistance in mechanics on the topic of forces in equilibrium and friction. the question reads:A small block of weight W newtons is placed on a plane inclined at an angle theta to the horizontal. The coefficient of friction between the block and plane is mu.
a) If mu=1/5 and tan (theta)=3/4 find, in terms of W, the magnitude of the horizontal force needed to prevent the bock from slipping down the plane.
b) If mu=2/5 and theta=60 degrees find, in terms of W, the magnitude of the horizontal force that will be on the point of making the block slide up the plane.

I know this elementary Physics/Mechanics as good as I know the School Math,  and I would be ready answer your question . . . BUT.


But your question is formulated in a strange way.


The TRADITIONAL question would be about the magnitude of the force directed along the incline 
needed to prevent the block from slipping down the plane.

Can you confirm,  looking into your source,  that the problem really asks about HORIZONTAL force in both cases ?

in this site.

Closely related problems were solved there in TRADITIONAL formulation,  so you can use them as samples and as approach to your problem.

But if in your problem the force under the question really is horizontal,  then the solution requires one more step.
