The formula for the nth term of an arithmetic sequence is
:
a(n) = a(1) +d(n-1) where a(1) is the first term and d is the common difference
:
we have two formulas in two unknowns
:
1) 27 = a(1) +d(1-1)
2) 53 = a(1) +d((5-1)
:
from equation 1), we have a(1) = 27
:
substitute 27 for a(1) in equation 2
:
53 = 27 +4d
:
4d = 26
:
d = 6.5
:
