Romans added and subtracted their numerals to show the exact value that was needed.
VI means 5+1 so
VI means 6
IV means 5-1 so
IV means 4


Now (IVXI) should be read from the left
(IV) means -4
(XI) means 11
so it means (11-4)=7


(VIX) can be figured the same way
(V) means -5
(IX) means 9
so it means 9-5=4
