Solution: The area the product of 2 sides. Since it's a rectangle, 2 adjacent sides will use 1/2 of the 172 feet, or 86 feet.
The area = L x (86-L), or
Set the 1st derivative = 0.
86-2L=0 (Yes, it's a calculus problem any time you want max or minimum.)
86 = 2L
L = 43.
