Question 983306: The sides of a square are increased to form a rectangle. One side in increased by 3 units and the other side is increased by 4 units. The area of the rectangle is 110 sq. units. What was the length of the side of the square?

Hi there,
One side is increased by 3 units
= x + 3
Other side is increased by 4 units
= x + 4
Area of rectangle = 110 units^2
(x + 3)(x + 4) = 110
Multiply out
x^2 + 4x + 3x + 12 = 110
Collect like terms
x^2 + 7x + 12 - 110 = 0
x^2 + 7x - 98 = 0
(x - 7)(x + 14)= 0
x + 14 = 0
x = -14 (No answer as -ve)
x - 7 = 0
x = 7
Original side of square = 7 units.
Hope this helps:-)
