Answer by Boreal(15235) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
short piece=x
long piece is 3x+3, three more than three times.
sum is 48 feet
3x+3+x=48. Collect terms and subtract 3 from both sides.
4x=45
x=11.25 feet
3x=33.75; 3x+3=36.75
Checks.
