Question 923879: Solve the following by forming an equation to represent the information given. Two pairs of socks and a tie cost 36 euros. At the same price three pairs of socks and four ties would cost 114 euros. Find the cost of one pair of socks and the cost of one tie
Answer by Cromlix(4381)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A pair of socks = x
A tie = y
2x + y = 36........(1)
3x + 4y = 114......(2)
Multiply (1) by 4 it becomes (3)
8x + 4y = 144.......(3)
3x + 4y = 114.......(2)
Subtract (2) from (3)
5x = 30
x = 6
Substitute x = 6 into (1)
2x + y = 36
12 + y = 36
y = 24
A pair of socks cost 6 euros
A tie costs 24 euros.
Hope this helps.
