Question 891417: The width of a rectangle is two inches longer than one-third of its length. Find the width and the length if the perimeter is 68 inches.
Answer by JulietG(1812)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Perimeter = 2L + 2W
W = L + 2
Substitute the value of W from the second equation into the first
P = 2L + 2W
68 = 2L + 2(L+2)
68 = 2L + L + 4
Subtract 4 from each side
64 = 2L
64 = L
Multiply each side by
24 = L
If the length is 24, the width is of that + 2, or 10
24 + 24 + 10 + 10 = 68
