Question 751106: A train ticket has an area of 154 square centimeters and a perimeter of 50 centimeters. What are the dimensions of the ticket?
Answer by Cromlix(4381)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
xy = 154.....1
2x + 2y = 50...2
Convert equation 1 to:
y = 154/x .....3
Replace y = 154/x in equation (2)
2x + 2(154/x) = 50
Using denominator x
2x^2 + 308 = 50x
2x^2 - 50x + 308
Divide throughout by 2
x^2 - 25x + 154
(x - 11)(x - 14)
so x = 11, y = 14 or x = 14, y = 11

So the dimensions are:
11cm and 14 cm
