 The problem points out that the rectangle has a diagonal measurement of 46. If you draw a picture, you will draw a line across the rectangle; the rectangle will look like it has two halfs. Now if you look closely it will look like a triangle! We can use the pythagorean theorem:
a^2+b^2=c^2
We know that 46 lies on the hypotenuse so we can plug it into c^2.
We can plug 36 into a^2.
We now have:
36^2 + b^2 = 46^2
1296+c^2=2116
c^2=820
c= square root of 820
c= 28.64
