"The length of a rectangle is 4 in longer than its width.
If the perimeter of the rectangle is 40 in, find its area. "
x = width
x + 4 = length
Perimeter of a rectangle is 2(width) + 2(length)
2x + 2(x + 4) = 40 {perimeter is 2(width) + 2(length)}
2x + 2x + 8 = 40 {used distributive property}
4x + 8 = 40 {combined like terms}
4x = 32 {subtracted 8 from both sides}
x = 8 {divided both sides by 4}
x + 4 = 12 {substituted 8, in for x, into x + 4}
Area of a rectangle is length x width
Area = 8 x 12
Area = 96 inē
