Jenny is standing on a hill, and she shouts down, "I'm radical 17 yards away, hang on!" Your other friend, Tim, is standing near a tree that is 4.2 yards away. Which of your friends is closer to you: Jenny or Tim?
the part I don't get about this problem is the radical 17 part because I don't know what a radical is...

Note: some use 'radical 17' as a way of expressing  = 4.1 to the nearest 10th.

If Jenny is 4.1yds away and Tim 4.2 yards away...Jenny would be closer to You
