Question 333636: I am having a lot of trouble with this question: "The area of a rectangle is 528 sq mm. The base is 8 more than three times the height. What is the perimeter?" I started the problem by setting up this equation: 528=h(3h+8) where h=height. Then I got 528=3h^2+8h. However, I'm not sure what to do after this.

Start with the given equation.

Subtract 528 from both sides.

Notice that the quadratic is in the form of where , , and

Let's use the quadratic formula to solve for "h":

Start with the quadratic formula

Plug in , , and

Square to get .

Multiply to get

Rewrite as

Add to to get

Multiply and to get .

Take the square root of to get .

or Break up the expression.

or Combine like terms.

or Simplify.

So the solutions are or

However, a negative height doesn't make any sense. So we'll ignore

This means that the height is 12 mm.

I'll let you use this info to find the perimeter.
