When you're measuring length or distance, the units are always in L, where L is your length measurement (mm,inch,ft,yd, mile, etc.)
Whenever you're calculating area indepdent of the shape, the units are always in L^2 or sq. L.
Whenever you're calculating volume, the units are always L^3 or cubic L.
