Yes, they are the same
Draw yourself a rectangle and label the length as 5 meters and the width as 4 meters.
Area of a rectangle = Length*Width; in this case 5 meters*4 meters and this equals 20 meters*meters=20 square meters or 20 meters^2
Meters describes length, width, height (one dimension) while square meters or meters^2 describes area (two dimensions) and meters^3 or cubic meters describes 3 dimensions such as volume.
