The length of a rectangle is five times its width. if the perimeter of the rectangle is 72 cm, find its area?
.
Let W = width
then
5W = length (from:"length of a rectangle is five times its width")
.
Since we know the perimeter:
2(W + 5W) = 72
(W + 5W) = 36
6W = 36
W = 6 cm (width)
.
Length:
5W = 5(6) = 30 cm (length)
.
Area:
Width * Length
6 * 30 = 180 square cm
