Answer by drj(1380)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The length of a rectangle is three more than twice the width. The perimeter is 36 inches. Find the dimensions.

Step 1. Perimeter means adding up the all 4 sides of the rectangle.

Step 2. Let w be the width.

Step 3. Let 2w+3 be the length.

Step 4. Then P=w+w+2w+3+2w+3=36 and solving yields the following steps.

Done!

With w=5, then 2w+3=13 and P=2(5+13)=36 which is a true statement

Step 5. ANSWER: The dimensions of the rectangle are 5 inches and 13 inches.
