A rectangular sheet of tin is 15cm long and 9cm wide. A uniform strip is to be cut off around the sheet. The remaining area is to be 112cm^2.
Calculate the width of the strip.

Solve the quadratic for

. You will get two roots. One of them is larger than 9, so twice that, subtracted from either 9 or 15 is less than zero. Exclude that root. The other one is your answer.
