For any rectangle, we know that the perimeter is the total of all sides:
length + length + width + width
or
2(length+width) = perimeter
.
In your problem, you were given
perimeter = 46
width = 8
Therefore, if we let x = length our equation is
2(x+8) = 46
Solving for x:
(x+8) = 23
x = 15 inches (length of rectangle)
