Let L=length and W=width

Since "The length of a rectangle is 1 less than three times it's width", this means that and because "The perimeter is 30 ft", this tells us that

Start with the perimeter formula

Plug in and

Distribute

Add 2 to both sides.

Combine like terms.

Divide both sides by 8 to isolate W.

Reduce.

Rearrange the equation.

So the width is 4 feet.

Go back to the first equation

Plug in

Multiply.

Subtract.

So the length is 11 feet.
