Actually, this does not have to be a triangle. First draw a shape. How about a rectangle? Draw the rectangle. Then on the top, mark the length as 42. Then by drawing two straight lines from the top to the bottom of the rectangle, divide the rectangle into three parts. The top line is still marked as 42. Mark the segments of the bottom line (the segments where the vertical lines divide) as , , and . So the bottom side is + + . Since one property of a rectangles is that the opposite sides are congruent, then by drawing this, you have illustrated that + + is congruent to 42 (the top side). And there you have it! No sweat, right?
