First find the equation for the area of a rectangle. Length x Width=area of a rectangle. Your problem is that the area has been found and you must find the width. We can use an algebraic equation to solve this. If x=width, 8=length and 72=area, then we can plug these numbers the equation for area of a rectangle. x*8=72. In order to find "x" (width) we need it to be by itself. Divide by "8" on both sides. (x*8)/8=72/8. This will cancel the eight on the left and leave you with x=72/8 or x=9. Now we need to be completely sure we haven't missed any steps. With all known variants solve the equation L*W=Area. 8(length)*9(width)=72(area). This is a correct equation.
