If L is the length, then the width is  (L-6).


The equation for L is


    L + (L-6) = 48/2


    2L - 6 = 24

    2L = 24 + 6 = 30

     L          = 30/2 = 15.


ANSWER.  The length is 15 ft;  the width is 15-6 = 9 ft.
