88 inches/ 4 sides=length+width of rectangle= 22 inches 22-4=18 18/2=the width=9 in. 9+4=length=13 in. The length is 13 in. and the width is 9 in.

The perimeter equation is  

L      + W + L      + W = 88,     or


(2W+4) + W + (2W+4) + W = 88,


6W + 8 = 88  ====>  6W = 88-8 = 80  ====>  W =  = .


Then  L = 2*W + 4 = .


Answer.  The length is    inches.  The width is    inches.
