I can't see the image, but I suspect the shaded area is not in the smaller rectangle but is contained in the larger.
A larger-A smaller= A shaded
(x-1)(x+5)-(x+1)(x-4)=x^2+4x-5-(x^2-3x-4)=7x-1 units ANSWER.
