Call the length and width, L and W. Then we have
L = W + 3 and
Area A = LW = 40
Substituting in we get
(W + 3)W = 40
W^2 + 3W - 40 = 0
(W + 8)(W - 5) = 0
W = 5 feet and then
L = 8 feet
