Question 181713: Hi,
Do you think that you could teach me how to set up and solve word problems such as the ones below? I am not good with word problems at all, and I would like to establish some kind of knowledge on how to set up and solve them. Thank you so much for taking your time to read this.
1.)A rectangular field beside a river is to be fenced. No fence is needed along the river bank. What are the dimensions of the field of greatest area which can be enclosed using 80 feet of fencing?
2.) A restaurant chain, in planning a new cafeteria, knows from experience that with a seating capacity of 100 or less they can expect a monthly profit of approximately $20.00 per seat. Within reasonable limits on size, they also know that if the seating capacity grows beyond 100, the monthly profit per seat decreases by 10 cents for each added seat. What seating capacity will give the maximum profit?
I tried to set it up like my teacher did:
x= maximum profit
100-x= number of seats
$20.00-.10= price per seat
Then I tried to solve:

After this point, I am lost on how to solve.
