Question 167899: I am working with my school website on My Math Lab and this is a question asked. I need to solve for x.
4x(x-2)-5x(x-1)=2
I have already taken the steps to make the problem
4x^2-8x-5x^2-5x=2, but that is all I have. I have been trying by "substitution", but have not found the answer. Please help me solve for x.
Thank you,
Rachel

: Toxic pollutants. The annual cost in dollars for removing
p% of the toxic chemicals from a town’s water supply is
given by the formula
C(p)= 500,000/100-p
.
a) Use the accompanying graph to estimate the cost for
removing 90% and 95% of the toxic chemicals.
b) Use the formula to find C(99.5) and C(99.9).
c) What happens to the cost as the percentage of
pollutants removed approaches 100%?

Question 170223: My question pertains to a rational function that appears on page 36 in W.W. Sawyer's short book(not a textbook) entitled What Is Calculus About? At one point on this page, Sawyer says that velocity equals (-1)x t^-2. So, the equation is v= (1)x t^-2. Sawyer notes that ^t-2 can be changed to 1/t^2. Then he says that v= -1/t^2.
But when I multiply -1/-1 times 1/t^2 I get -1/-t^2 instead of -1/t^2. I assume that I am doing something wrong. What am I doing wrong? Why does the correct transformation result in -1/t^2 rather than -1/-t^2?

Question 170243: I have a take home test and attempted all the problems, but following are a few that I need help with...
Solve for x.
problem #1
____x^2______ =
x^2 – 6x – 16
___16____
(x+8)(x–2)
I can get as far as;
____x^2___ =
(x-8)(x+2)
____16____
(x+8)(x-2)
but not sure what to do now...
problem #2
__x__ =
x^2-9
__1__
(x+3)
so far I have,
____x____ =
(x-3)(x+3)
__1__
(x+3)
then, I cross multiply, to get
x(x+3) =
(x-3)(x+3)
then, I subtract (x+3) from both sides to leave,
x = (x-3) right?
problem #3
[___3___ _._ __a__ ] + (a+1)
[(a^2-1) . (a+1) ]
first, I flip the second fraction to multiply...
[___3___ x _(a+1)_ ] + (a+1)
[(a^2-1) a ]
then, I cancel the "a in the second fraction and factor the two remaining fractios by the LCD to leave,
__3_+_(a+1)((a-1)(a+1))__
(a-1)(a+1)
then, I factor out the LCD to leave,
3+(a+1) right?
I don't know what #3 is, pls rewrite it using parentheses.
