You have to find a common denominator. It doesn't have to be the least.
4b/9 - 8b/12
Reduce the 2nd term.
4b/9 - 2b/3
9 is obviously the CD.
4b/9 - 2b/3 = 4b/9 - 6b/9
= -2b/9
