Question 867026: x^2+2x-8 divided by -x^3-2x^2-24x
my teacher wants me to simplify it then factor it out and tell her what x cannot be.
so far I factored the top one.. I believe it is
(x+4)(x-2)
but I do not know how to solve the bottom because it is cubed..

x^2+2x-8 divided by -x^3-2x^2-24x
my teacher wants me to simplify it then factor it out and tell her what x cannot be.
so far I factored the top one.. I believe it is
(x+4)(x-2)
but I do not know how to solve the bottom because it is cubed..
-----------
You don't solve the bottom, you factor it.
-----
-x^3-2x^2-24x
Factor out (or divide by) -x
= -x*(x^2 + 2x + 12)
------------
x cannot be a value that makes the DEN (bottom) = 0
So x <> 0
------
The other 2 x's are complex numbers, not real.
I don't know if you want those.

Quadratic equation (in our case ) has the following solutons:

For these solutions to exist, the discriminant should not be a negative number.

First, we need to compute the discriminant : .

The discriminant -44 is less than zero. That means that there are no solutions among real numbers.

If you are a student of advanced school algebra and are aware about imaginary numbers, read on.

In the field of imaginary numbers, the square root of -44 is + or - .

The solution is , or
