Question 62484: Solve 3x(to the 3rd)+7x(squared)-22x-8=0, given that negative one third is a solution.
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve 3x(to the 3rd)+7x(squared)-22x-8=0, given that negative one third is a solution.
----------
3x^3+7x^2-22x-8=0 and x=-1/3 is a zero
If x=-1/3 is a zero:
x-1/3=0
3x-1 is a factor.
Divide the polynomial by 3x-1 to get:
3x^2+6x-24
Using the quadratic formula you get:
x=[-6+-sqrt(36-4*3*-24]/-6
x=[-6+-18]/(-6)
x=-2 or x=4
--------------
Final Soluition:
x=-1/3, x=-2, x=4
