Question 613959: I really need help with an application Assignment for Algebra 2 in college.
It is one problem with 9 questions.
I am not sure how to even start it. The assignment starts out with a story:
Suppose you are managing sales of tickets for a large concert venue. In order to anticipate staffing needs in the box office, you must gather information about projected tickets sales for an upcoming concert. The expected number of tickeet sales for each day x is given by the following equation:
tickets=-0.5x^2-18x+9
1)Does the graph of this equation open up or down? How do you know?
2)Descibe what happens to the ticket sales as time passes.
3) Use the quadractic formula to determine the last day that tickets will be sold. Write your answer in terms of the number of days after tickets sales begin.
4) Will ticket sales be at a peak during the middle of the sale? How do you know?
There are five more questions, but I may be able to do these once I get started. It just feels like info is missing, Can you help?

Suppose you are managing sales of tickets for a large concert venue. In order to anticipate staffing needs in the box office, you must gather information about projected tickets sales for an upcoming concert. The expected number of tickeet sales for each day x is given by the following equation:
tickets=-0.5x^2-18x+9
1)Does the graph of this equation open up or down? How do you know?
The graph depends on:
tickets=-0.5x^2-18x+9
We identify that it is a parabola because it is a polynomial of degree 2.
Because the coefficient (-0.5) associated with the x^2 term is NEGATIVE, we know that it is a vertical parabola that opens downwards.
.
2)Descibe what happens to the ticket sales as time passes.
Ticket sales increases, then reaches a peak at the vertex and then proceeds to decrease.
3) Use the quadractic formula to determine the last day that tickets will be sold. Write your answer in terms of the number of days after tickets sales begin.
given:
tickets=-0.5x^2-18x+9
set "tickets" to zero and solve for x:
0=-0.5x^2-18x+9
applying the "quadratic formula" we get:
x = {-36.49, 0.49}
You can throw out the negative solution (extraneous) leaving:
x = .49
So, it will sell out after half a day!
4) Will ticket sales be at a peak during the middle of the sale? How do you know?
No
