Your book probably explains it, and it's not too hard. First, change the inequality to an equality. Solve the equality and plot it. Next take an ordered pair to the left, right, above, or below the line you just plotted and substitute those values into the original equation; i.e., the inequality. If the statement is true, then you will shade to that side of the line; if false, shade the opposite side.
