A line in point-slope form: y = mx +b
m = slope
b = y-intercept (0,b)
.
y = 3x+7
slope =3
y-intercept = (0,7)
if x = -7/3, then y =0
x-intercept = (-7/3, 0)
with two points you draw a line
.
a perpendicular line has a slope = to the negative inverse of the first equation
so the slope of the second equation will be -1/3
.
y = -(1/3)x + b
.
use the point you want it go through to find 'b'
(x,y) = (1,-6)
.
-6 = -(1/3)(1) + b
b = -6 + 1/3
b = -18/3 +1/3
b = -17/3
.
y = -(1/3)x -17/3
.
